AI-generated image and video detection is an analytical method that layers computational detector outputs, physics-based visual review, and file metadata inspection to assess whether media has been synthetically created or significantly altered. No single tool resolves the question on its own. The standard approach treats any individual detector result as a corroborating signal within a structured verification process, not as a definitive finding. Detection accuracy is an active research problem: as generative models improve, classifier performance degrades, and the field is in continuous development.
The method applies wherever media authenticity is materially contested: news verification under deadline, election and conflict monitoring, evidentiary assessment before legal submission, and auditing content from sources whose identity or affiliation is unverified. Detector output, provenance metadata, reverse search findings, and visual analysis each produce partial signals. Each indicator, individually, is ambiguous. The pattern, corroborated across methods, is not.
