| 01 | Conflict zone evidence holds only if it can survive scrutinyFootage from active conflict zones is high-volume, high-stakes and routinely contested. A video showing a weapon system, a unit insignia or a strike location may be genuine, misattributed or deliberately fabricated. The evidentiary standard required to attribute an event to a specific actor is higher than for most OSINT work, and the consequences of error are severe. |
Conflict zone OSINT operates at the intersection of visual forensics, weapons identification, geolocation and unit attribution. Each discipline contributes one layer of evidence. No single layer is sufficient for attribution; the standard requires convergence across multiple independent methods pointing to the same actor.
This tutorial covers the core methods: identifying weapons and equipment from visual evidence, attributing unit markings and insignia, geolocating footage within a conflict zone, and assembling findings to the evidentiary standard required for publication or legal use.
In the field In October 2019, The New York Times Visual Investigations team traced the bombing of four hospitals in north-western Syria within 12 hours, on 5 and 6 May 2019, to Russian Air Force pilots. Each hospital was on a UN deconfliction list provided to the warring parties, including Russia. No single stream carried the attribution; the case rests on independent streams that converge.

Learning outcomes
By the end of this tutorial you will be able to:
Identify weapons systems and equipment from visual evidence using open reference databases
Attribute unit markings, insignia and vehicle identification numbers to specific military formations
Geolocate conflict zone footage using terrain, architecture and satellite imagery cross-reference
Assess the evidentiary standard of conflict zone findings and identify what additional corroboration is required before publication
Document a conflict zone attribution chain to the standard required for legal or journalistic use
The rest of this tutorial is for Signal subscribers.
What remains: the decision framework, the tool configuration, the failure modes, and the evidentiary standard required to use the finding defensibly.
