Environmental sound analysis extracts locational and contextual intelligence from ambient audio in recordings. Calls to prayer, traffic patterns, bird species, industrial machinery, and acoustic reverberation signatures are not incidental background: they are forensic data. Every environment produces a distinct sound profile, shaped by geography, climate, and infrastructure. That profile can corroborate or contradict a claimed recording location independent of any visual content present in the file.
The technique applies when footage is obscured, edited, or absent: verifying time of day from biological soundscape cues, identifying industrial or military activity from mechanical noise signatures, distinguishing indoor from outdoor environments via reverberation, and testing consistency across spliced recordings. A single ambient sound event is not a location fix. The pattern of cues, corroborated across species range data, infrastructure profiles, and comparative recordings, is.
ACU-002 sets out the methodology for acquiring, analysing, and corroborating environmental and location cues in sound recordings to evidentiary standard.
