Satellite imagery has been the verification baseline of last resort for two decades, and for one day in late July anyone with a browser could fabricate it on real coordinates. The check that survives this does not depend on watermarks or detection tools: it cross-references any suspect frame against an independent capture archive Google does not control. Google pulled the feature inside twenty-four hours, but the capability is now public knowledge, and that part does not roll back.

A browser tab could fabricate satellite imagery on real coordinates

Google made an AI image generation feature live inside Google Earth on 30 July 2026, powered by its Nano Banana 2 model. Anyone with a web browser could navigate to a location, click create image, and generate photorealistic output constrained to the actual satellite, aerial and 3D terrain data at that spot. The precedent was already in the open record. During the conflict involving Iran earlier in 2026, Iran's state-aligned Tehran Times published a before-and-after image falsely showing destruction at a United States naval base in Bahrain, built from a genuine Google Earth capture dated February 2025. That fabrication took several steps: find the image, edit it in a separate tool, reassemble the composite. It still gathered millions of views before it was debunked. The Google Earth feature collapsed that whole workflow into one text prompt.

At what point did the open record contain sufficient signal to flag this as foreseeable. The answer is the launch announcement itself on 30 July, which described global in-browser availability with no waitlist, no enterprise restriction and no stated use-case gating, on a platform whose entire value rests on people trusting it to show what is actually there. Every element needed to predict the failure was in Google's own product post before a single researcher touched it.

Do this now

Open any Google Earth screenshot sitting in a live evidence file and note where it came from. Pull the same coordinates in Copernicus Browser and compare footprint, shadow direction and capture date. Record both captures with their acquisition dates alongside the original. A frame with no independent second capture behind it is not yet evidence.

The rollback removed the button. It did not restore the assumption underneath it. Satellite imagery held its position as the baseline of last resort because the source, a camera hundreds of miles up, was physically hard to imitate. This feature never imitated that source. It generated fabricated content on top of the real thing, inside the interface that certifies it.
