What it is
Reddit OSINT is the practice of investigating a user's posting history, a subreddit's activity, or deleted and removed content on Reddit to establish identity, timeline and intent. It answers what a pseudonymous account said, when, and whether the platform's own removal of a post or comment can be recovered through an independent archive.
Reddit presents a specific archival problem. A post or comment deleted by its author, or removed by a moderator, disappears from the live site but may persist in third-party archives that captured it beforehand. Since Reddit restricted its official API in 2023 and blocked unauthenticated data requests in 2026, the tooling landscape has shifted repeatedly, and several widely cited older guides now recommend dead services.
Investigators use Reddit OSINT to build a timeline of an account's activity, recover content the platform no longer displays, and corroborate claims made elsewhere by checking whether the same account or narrative also appears on Reddit.

How do you investigate a Reddit account or post?
Start on Reddit itself, then use an independent archive to recover anything the platform no longer shows.
Free before paid. Reddit's own API restrictions mean several once-standard tools listed in older guides no longer work; the list below reflects what is functional as of this guide's last update.
Reddit native search: Free with any account, no login required for public subreddits. The starting point for keyword and user search, with filters for subreddit, time range and content type.
Reveddit: Free, no signup. Shows moderator-removed content on a still-live post or user profile. It cannot recover content the author deleted themselves, only content removed by a moderator while the post remains up.
Arctic Shift: Free, no signup. Community-maintained archive built on the surviving Pushshift dataset, covering Reddit history from 2005 onward through a web search interface and API. Full-text search works within a single subreddit or user at a time rather than site-wide.
PullPush: Free, rate-limited. A revived Pushshift-style API supporting cross-subreddit keyword search, with coverage gaps and documented uptime issues; treat a null result as inconclusive rather than as proof something was never posted.
Wayback Machine: Free. General web archive; useful for capturing a Reddit page as evidence and for recovering pages crawled before deletion, independent of Reddit-specific tooling.
Before you begin
Stop at the login
Reddit's native search and public subreddits do not require an account for read access, though logging in raises rate limits and unlocks some search filters. Reddit blocked unauthenticated .json API requests in May 2026, so any older script relying on that method no longer functions; use the tools listed here instead.
Legal considerations
Reddit's terms restrict automated scraping and bulk data collection outside its official API; the tools recommended here operate through public web interfaces or maintained third-party archives rather than violating platform terms directly, but bulk automated collection of Reddit data for commercial use carries separate licensing requirements investigators should be aware of.
The method

Confirm the account is what it claims to be
Goal · Rule out impersonation before building any timeline
Check account age, karma history and post distribution across subreddits. A newly created account with a display name matching a known individual is not evidence of that individual's involvement; cross-reference against other identifiers before treating the account as attributed.

Pull the full visible post and comment history
Goal · Establish a baseline timeline from what is still live
Use Reddit's native profile view alongside its search filters to compile every visible post and comment by date. Note gaps in the timeline, since a gap may indicate deleted content worth recovering rather than genuine inactivity.

Check Reveddit for moderator-removed content
Goal · Recover posts and comments a moderator removed while the account remains active
Run the account's profile URL through Reveddit. It flags content that is still technically present in Reddit's backend but hidden from public view by moderation action, distinct from author-deleted content.

Query Arctic Shift for historical and deleted content
Goal · Search Reddit history beyond what the live site displays, including some author-deleted material
Use Arctic Shift's web interface to search within the specific subreddit or by the specific username. Because full-text search is scoped to one subreddit or user at a time, run separate queries per subreddit of interest rather than one site-wide search.

Cross-check with PullPush for site-wide keyword search
Goal · Find matching content when the subreddit is unknown
When you have a phrase or claim but no subreddit to search within, PullPush is currently the only free option offering Reddit-wide keyword search. Treat results as a lead to verify against the primary source, not as confirmed fact given the tool's coverage gaps.

Archive every finding independently
Goal · Preserve evidence that Reddit or a moderator could remove at any point
Submit the direct URL of any post, comment or profile of interest to the Wayback Machine's Save Page Now tool, and take a full-page screenshot including the visible timestamp and username.

Pivot the username to other platforms
Goal · Corroborate identity through cross-platform username correlation
Check whether the same username, or a close variant, appears on other platforms. A consistent username across Reddit and another service is corroborating evidence, not proof, and should be weighed alongside other signals.

What false positives affect Reddit investigations?
Reddit's archival gaps and account mechanics create specific traps.
Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence: A null result from Arctic Shift or PullPush does not mean content was never posted. Both tools have documented coverage gaps, particularly for content posted or deleted in narrow windows around Reddit's repeated API changes.
Verifying check: Cross-check a negative result against at least one other archive source, such as the Wayback Machine, before reporting an absence as fact.
Deleted versus removed are different states: Author-deleted content and moderator-removed content behave differently across tools. Reveddit only recovers moderator removals; it will not show content the author deleted themselves.
Verifying check: Confirm which state applies before choosing a tool. If Reveddit shows nothing, that does not rule out an author deletion recoverable through a separate archive.
Username reuse across unrelated individuals: Common usernames and generic handles are frequently reused by unrelated people across platforms.
Verifying check: Corroborate a cross-platform username match with at least one additional signal, such as consistent writing style, posting times, or shared unique details, before treating it as the same individual.
Throwaway accounts break continuity: An investigator tracking a single account may miss that the same individual operates multiple accounts, particularly throwaway accounts created for sensitive posts.
Verifying check: Look for stylistic and contextual overlap between accounts rather than assuming a single account represents the full extent of a person's Reddit activity.
Chain of custody: Reddit content can be deleted by the author or removed by a moderator at any time after capture, and third-party archives themselves can go offline, as happened to several Pushshift-era tools in 2023. Capture independently and immediately.
Screenshot the full post or comment including the visible username, timestamp and permalink.
Record the exact permalink URL for every item.
Submit each permalink to the Wayback Machine's Save Page Now tool at time of discovery.
Note which recovery tool surfaced the content (Reveddit, Arctic Shift, or PullPush) and the date queried.
Save a local copy of the raw text, not only a screenshot, to preserve searchable content.
