  Identity

Reverse image search locates other instances of a photograph or visually similar images across indexed web sources, enabling investigators to connect an unidentified individual or image to a verified identity, prior context, or publication record. The technique operates by matching a visual fingerprint or image hash across search engine indices, and it becomes substantially more powerful when combined with facial geometry comparison tools and systematic metadata extraction from the image file.

The technique applies whenever an unknown individual appears in conflict or protest imagery, when a photograph is suspected of reuse from a different context or date, when a profile image needs tracing across platforms, or when establishing the disinformation history of a circulating image. No single engine covers the full index: Google Images, TinEye, and Yandex each return results the others miss, and facial geometry tools extend the method from image matching to identity resolution. Each match, individually, is probabilistic. The chain of corroborated matches across independent sources is not.

IDN-001 sets out the methodology for extracting image metadata, running multi-engine reverse searches, and building a corroborated identity chain from visual evidence to evidentiary standard.

Eight workflow steps, seven tooling sources, five false-positive checks, five chain-of-custody requirements.
