When a source, a subject, or a person of interest maintains several handles with no surface-level connection between them, the investigator's options narrow fast. Username cross-reference fails by design. Avatar and metadata techniques hit the same wall. What remains is the writing itself.
Stylometric analysis — the forensic study of writing patterns as identifying features — has a long academic history and a short practical one. The core idea is sound: people write the way they write. Lexical preferences, sentence length rhythms, punctuation habits, compound word choices, the ratio of passive to active constructions — these resist conscious manipulation more than any other output a person produces. But manual stylometric comparison across thousands of posts on three separate forums is the kind of task that takes a forensic linguist a week and an investigator with no linguistics background considerably longer.
The failure mode without AI assistance is not that the analysis cannot be done. It is that it cannot be done in the time available, at the granularity required, without collapsing under cognitive load. An investigator eyeballing three forum archives for style signals will anchor on whatever pattern catches first and miss the patterns that do not shout.
